How to Make the Switch to Healthier Body Care Products

If you’re ready to switch to healthier body care products but don’t know where to start or how to do it easily, you aren’t alone!

If you’re ready to switch to healthier body care products but don’t know where to start or how to do it easily, you aren’t alone! I talk with a lot of families who want to choose better products, but quickly get overwhelmed. Replacing everything at once isn’t practical for many of us, but the good news is it isn’t necessary.

Making the decision to switch is the first step, so you can check that off your list! Now the fun begins. But where to do you start? How do you know what’s really healthy?

Here are my top 5 tips for making the switch to healthier body care products, without going crazy:

1. Streamline.

Start with a little audit of your body and baby care products to see what you’re actually using. If you can get rid of anything you’re not using, it will automatically simplify and streamline the next steps. Consider donating unopened packages to your local shelter, keep as spares in your gym bag or office desk, and be sure to recycle or dispose of the packaging and contents appropriately.

2. Prioritize.

Once you’ve pared down the products in your medicine cabinet, shower, and toiletry bag, consider how often you use something and whether you use it on children. Products that are used on children or those that you use every day should be replaced first.

“If you’re thinking that you’ll start next week, or next month, why not start now?”

3. Review.

Choose your top 3 products that you use every day and take a look at the ingredients. You can check out the Environmental Defence Toxic Ten list of ingredients to help you avoid some of the worst ones.

4. Choose brands that have ingredient standards.

There are no regulations for body care label terms like “natural” and “non-toxic”, so you really have to pay attention to what’s in the bottle. And just because a brand has a “healthy” option, doesn’t mean all their products are. This is why I love Green Beaver: they have very clear ingredient standards across the entire line.

5. Replace early.

Once you’ve identified what you want to replace and with what, make sure you pick up the healthier replacement before you need it. This way, you’ll be less likely to just pick up what you’re used to, ending up no farther ahead.

So, if you’re thinking that you’ll start next week, or next month, why not start now? Green Beaver has so many options for products your whole family uses so you can take care of your first few product replacements all in one place. I love a good one-stop shop!

If you’re looking for inspiration on products you probably use every day, I personally love the citrus deodorant, Extra Dry Skin Body Lotion, face cream, and toothpaste (this is also a noticeable favourite amongst members of my Green Product Forum Facebook Group).

I hope this helps you take the next step to clean up your body care products! Your body will thank you as you make the shift away from harmful chemicals and move to more natural, healthy ingredients. Enjoy the journey.

IG1:

If you’re in my Green Product Forum, you’ll know how much I struggle with natural shampoo and conditioners.

I have pretty strict ingredient standards. But I also like my products to work. And for years, I’ve lowered my standards for shampoo and conditioner because I couldn’t find a natural brand that worked with my thick, curly, dry hair.

I had tried Green Beaver years ago, and it wasn’t moisturizing enough for me. But then I heard of their new hydrating coconut line… and everything I’ve tried from Green Beaver I’ve loved, so I had to give it a shot.

The verdict?

It’s a WIN! It smells nice, it lathers well, and most importantly, it leaves me with soft curls – FINALLY! I’m so excited to stop struggling through bottle after bottle of failed products (seriously, you should see my shower, I’ve got part bottles everywhere). Thanks Green Beaver!
