Why do we have to worry about perfume and fragrances?

When choosing a cleaning product to handle big chores at home, or a new product that we want to introduce to our skin care routine, we often tend to turn to one that will appeal to our sense of smell. Our house will smell clean, and our skin will be fresh by giving off a delicate scent when getting out of the shower or before bedtime. However, more and more products without perfume and without fragrance are making their apparition on the shelves. Why? Because many studies show that several chemicals hide behind these famous fragrances triggering a multitude of adverse reactions among consumers.

However, more and more products without perfume and without fragrance are making their apparition on the shelves. Why? Because many studies show that several chemicals hide behind these famous fragrances triggering a multitude of adverse reactions among consumers.

Companies are required by law to list the ingredients that make up the products they want to put on the market. A particularity of this law is, however, rather unknown to the general public. The ingredients associated with perfume do not have to be disclosed to the consumer. According to the David Suzuki Foundation, about 3000 chemicals can enter the composition of different fragrances found in our everyday lives. One particular concern to the researchers is that the toxicity of most of these products has not been tested either alone or in combination. Moreover, it is estimated that nearly 30% of the population suffers from intolerance to perfume. This results in skin problems, headaches or breathing problems, to name a few.

Which alternatives are available to the consumer who wants to move away from these chemicals? Unscented options represent an option, just like natural products. It is for the reasons listed above that we have chosen to add essential oils to our products to give them a delicate fragrance without irritating your skin. Above all, keep reading the labels of the products before letting them enter your daily life, and beware of the term fragrance or perfume!
