Give your trash can a break!

We all know that the products we use on a daily basis have an impact on our health, but our habits and choices also have an effect on the amount of waste we produce. A recent study showed that Canadians produce more garbage per capita than any other country in the world. It was estimated that Canadians generate no less than 31 million tons of garbage every year while recycling only 30% of that. Each Canadian is responsible for 2.7kg of garbage every day. Uh oh, that’s a lot!

Give your trash can a break!

Okay, but what can I do?

There’s a lot that can be done to reduce the amount of garbage that will end up in a landfill. It’s sometimes only a matter of changing our habits and making a few adjustments in our routine that will generate the biggest results. Here are a few easy things you can do to help Mother Nature find her smile back.

Reduce, reuse and recycle

The best way to ensure your waste production goes down is by consuming only what’s truly necessary. Buy products that have as little packaging as possible and only buy what you really need - no more impulse buying. Another thing you can do to reduce the amount of paper around you is to add a sticker to your mailbox that indicates you don’t want any junk mail. Also, subscribe to online billing!

Take a reusable bag with you when you go shopping so that you don’t use plastic bags. Just keep them in the trunk of your car or by the door - you won’t forget them at home anymore.

Then, of course, do not lose your good habits of making the trip to the recycling bin!

All the solutions are already in place, you just have to use them!

Choose wisely

We will always need basic commodities, which will eventually end up in the trash can, but we can choose products that are less harmful for the environment. What would be the perfect partner for your favourite all-natural toothpaste? A bamboo toothbrush! Eco-friendly, biodegradable and naturally antimicrobial, this one has it all.

Do a little research and you will find many natural or environmental options way better than the ones we are used to.

Plan your meals in advance

Did you know that the average Canadian throws out approximately 170 kg of food every year? It was recently showed that this would be the equivalent of throwing out a quarter of your groceries as soon as we leave the supermarket. Uh, no thanks! That’s why it’s a good idea to make a meal plan before heading to the supermarket. Not only will it make you save a lot of money, but it will also give your garbage can a much-needed rest - a win-win!

Nobody is perfect and grocery shopping is not an exact science, so you will most probably end up throwing things out. That’s why you should start composting. It is now easier than ever to do it, so lend a hand to Mother Nature by giving your flowers and your garden the extra nutrient they need to grow!

Educate

Introducing new ideas or refreshing someone’s memory on why it is important to do the little things is probably more important than anything else. Because the more people we are to take care of our planet, the more impressive the impact will be. So don’t hesitate to share tips & tricks with friends and family, or to explain to your little ones why it’s important to change our habits. Every gesture counts!
