Established in 1993 by the United Nations, World Water Day aims to raise awareness on the water crisis around the world. The theme this year is Water and climate change - and how the two are inextricably linked. As Canadians, we sometimes forget how valuable water is - 20% of the world's freshwater resources are found in Canada, and that may be the reason why we are among the highest consumers of water in the world with 335 liters per person, per day!
Celebrate World Water Day the way you should - by saving water!
Tips & tricks to save water
There are many things we can do to save water and reduce our daily consumption. Knowing that taking a shower counts for 35% of our consumption and that another 30% is used to flush down the toilet, it’s safe to say that the bathroom is definitely an area we need to focus on. Here are some tips to keep in mind as well as some habits to change in order to reduce your water consumption.
Take shorter showers: 150 liters of water are required to fill a bath, while a 6-minute shower, fitted with a low-flow showerhead will consume 35 liters of water. If you haven't already done so, investing in a water-efficient showerhead could pay off! When you know that hot water accounts for 20% to 30% of your electricity bill, reducing your consumption is no longer only good for the environment, it is also good for your wallet. Your new acquisition will be reimbursed in no time.
Be a leak detective: Walk through your house and go leak-hunting. When you know that a single leak can sputter up to 150 liters of water each day, it’s definitely a good idea to take a few minutes to fix the problem!
Collect rainwater: Do you have a garden that needs a lot of watering? Install rain barrels that will collect rainwater so that you can use it for the next few days without using potable water.
Use a sunscreen that is reef safe: a reef-safe sunscreen means that its ingredients are not harmful to marine life and the coral reef ecosystem. In addition to being environment-friendly, our sunscreen is biodegradable, organic and made with natural ingredients. Available as a moisturizer or spray, you have the choice between a version for babies, for kids and for adults.
We all have the power to make a difference and our actions at home are where it all starts. Change your habits with these simple tricks and help save water for the future!
