Summer is finally here, which means sunscreen season is back in full force! As we spend more time outside, it’s important to find a good sunscreen that protects the whole family against UVA and UVB rays. But with so many options available, which one is the right one for you?
How to choose the best (natural) sunscreen
Let’s start by answering the question we hear the most. Why would I choose a SPF 27 when there are other higher options, like SPF 50 or SPF 100? A higher number offers better protection, right?
Well, not really. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and represents time and not strength. What that means is that a sunscreen with a SPF 40 allows you to stay under the sun for 40 times longer than if you didn’t wear any. The higher the SPF, the longer you can stay under the sun, but the least effective the sunscreen will be against UVA rays.
If possible, the best choice would be to use a lower SPF sunscreen, but to apply it more often during the day - because sunscreen shouldn’t be applied only once in the morning. To protect your skin against sunburns and UV rays causing damage to your skin (and leading to more serious problems like cancer), you should apply sunscreen multiple times in a day.
Another question we get a lot is concerning the efficiency of natural sunscreen. Is it as good as the “real one”?
As the biggest organ of the human body, skin absorbs more than 60% of products applied topically right into our bloodstream. That’s the first reason why you should opt for a natural product. Generic sunscreens are usually made of around 25% of chemical ingredients.
When using an All-Natural Mineral Sunscreen like ours, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide will act as a physical barrier, blocking away UVA and UVB rays. Be careful when choosing a sunscreen, as many companies will list these mineral components, but coat them with chemicals such as silicone and other toxic additives.
Here are a few things to remember to make sure you are fully protected:
Look for a broad spectrum, which will offer you a UVA and UVB protection.
Use a generous amount and make sure to apply on any skin that clothes don’t protect - don’t forget your ears, chin and nose.
Try to apply 15 minutes before going outside.
Re-apply at least every 2 hours.
