Our Story

Since our launch in 2002, Green Beaver has sought to provide healthy, natural products for your family and for ours. Founded by husband-and-wife team Karen Clark and Alain Ménard, whose work in the pesticide and pharmaceutical industries helped shape their interest in natural goods, Green Beaver was developed as a reaction to the harsh chemicals found in children’s shampoos, bubble baths, and other self-care products.

The Road Less Travelled

Since our launch in 2002, Green Beaver has sought to provide healthy, natural products for your family and for ours. Founded by wife-and-husband team Karen Clark and Alain Ménard, whose work in the pesticide and pharmaceutical industries helped shape their interest in natural goods, Green Beaver was developed as a reaction to the harsh chemicals found in children’s shampoos, bubble baths, and other self-care products.

After years of working as biochemists and microbiologists, Karen and Alain were appalled at the amount of dangerous ingredients used to create hygiene products, especially for children. So much so that Karen left her job in 1996 to begin formulating products that would eventually become Green Beaver mainstays. Additionally, it was when Alain’s 32-year-old sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999—a disease often linked to the parabens used in everyday products like deodorant—that Green Beaver truly became a team initiative.

The goal was simply to put their knowledge to better use and create a difference in the world by providing all-natural alternatives. In 2001, Karen and Alain welcomed their son, Joshua, into the family. He was the true inspiration for Green Beaver’s launch – after all, Karen and Alain had set out to provide healthy options to future generations of Canadian families.

The First Few Years

Between 2003 and 2009, Green Beaver thrived. Karen and Alain formulated new products, traveled to trade shows and health food stores, grew their brand, and put their energy into educating consumers about the benefits of all-natural ingredients. By the end of 2009, we became officially Ecocert certified and built our own production facility in Hawkesbury.

The spring of 2011 brought a big first for Canadians and Green Beaver alike: We launched the first Canadian organic mineral sunscreen with the help of the National Research Council. In the years to follow, we continued to launch products that would change the way Canadians and neighbouring countries would care for themselves and their families. We developed the Organic Honey Lip Balm to combat the precipitous decline of bees and developed soaps, deodorants, and toothpastes to better serve the growing community of natural skin care lovers.

Green Beaver's Evolution

Through better understanding of natural ingredients like sunflower oil, potassium nitrate, sage, and other organic elements, we made sustainable, reliable products with the environment and people in mind. In 2016, we became the first Canadian company to be Plastic Microbead-free since day one and our products were added to the Zero database.

Nowadays, after doubling our production line and continuing to educate consumers on the risks of chemicals, Green Beaver maintains its dedication to natural goodness. Regardless of our company’s growth, we have always remained dedicated to using certified organic Canadian ingredients. We are still a family-owned company and just like the name suggests, Green Beaver is a truly natural and purely Canadian brand.

Our Philosophy

We believe that each of us has the opportunity to create a positive impact in this world. For us, that means creating products that do not harm animals, do not harm the earth, and do not harm you. Our philosophy comes from years of research about the harmful effects that chemicals have on our bodies and on the environment, driving us to infuse all-natural goodness into everything we do. It’s more than a philosophy. It’s a promise. 

Green Beaver was founded on the belief that humans can live happily and healthfully off of the goodness that Mother Nature provides. We make it a priority to use organic ingredients that are locally grown whenever available. By doing so, we know that we are reducing transportation energy and waste while encouraging more Canadian farmers to adopt organic growing practices. The truth is, we all have the power to change the industries that are causing harm, and we can do it simply by choosing what we consume. At Green Beaver, we don’t use any synthetic substitutes in our products. For example, we use natural Vitamin E instead of chemically engineered vitamin E. Although this would reduce costs and increase profitability, it is simply not what we believe in. Instead, we believe in using “green tech” ingredients. These are natural ingredients that perform like synthetic ingredients, but without any of the toxins.

We also don’t believe in animal testing or in slaughtering animals for production. Everything we make is vegan-friendly, except for our lip balms that contain organic beeswax from Dan and Nina’s Hockley Valley Honey Farm.

Lastly, we believe in making products that can be safely used by everyone. That’s why all of our products are entirely gluten-free and everything except for our eye makeup remover is nut-free. Simply put, our philosophy is that healthy and happy is the best way to live, and that’s what we intend to do.
