Mineral Sunscreen

We know that dermatologists always recommend the importance of protecting our skin, especially when the sun is shining on warm summer days. While we might be familiar with why we need to use sunscreen, we rarely know what ingredients they contain, or that there are two types of sunscreens: chemical and mineral.

Do you have sensitive skin? Want to know if products are water-resistant? Or perhaps you’re concerned with the environmental impact sunscreen has when you wear it in the water. Keep reading to learn about why you should make the switch to mineral sunscreens, which is a safer alternative for your body and the planet compared to sunscreen with chemical ingredients.

    What Is Mineral Sunscreen?

Mineral sunscreens effectively protect your skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays by creating a barrier between your skin and the sun’s light. Mineral sunscreens contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide; these minerals reflect light away from the skin’s surface, thus preventing harmful rays from creating damage. This type of sunscreen is also reef friendly because it won’t lead to coral damage or harm marine life.

Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, contain active ingredients which absorb the sun’s light and create a chemical reaction where UV rays are converted into heat and then released. Always be aware that no matter what type of sunscreen you use, some active ingredients in skincare products should be avoided. If you plan to be out in the sun, pay attention to citric acid, which causes irritation and can make you even more sensitive to the sun. So make sure you stay in the shade as much as possible, and reapply your sunscreen even more frequently.

Unfortunately, ingredients used in chemical sunscreen are concerning. Some sunscreens have even been banned because there is a strong correlation that oxybenzone and octinoxate, the main ingredients found in chemical sunscreen, can lead to the destruction of coral reefs. In addition, chemical sunscreen ingredients have been shown to be absorbed into the bloodstream and may, over time, have some estrogen-mimicking effects on the body.

The skin is our body’s largest organ and is responsible for many essential functions. As mentioned above, chemical sunscreens applied to the skin are absorbed and have been found to enter bloodstream. When it comes to sun protection, we need to prioritize the use of safe ingredients that stay on the surface of the skin instead of opting for a lightweight sunscreen that gets absorbed into the body.

    Is Mineral Sunscreen Better?

At Green Beaver, we genuinely believe that you shouldn’t have to compromise when it comes to our health. The Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) 17th annual guide to sunscreen concluded that only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are clean ingredients that are safe for both humans, coral reefs and the environment on a broader scale.

Our mineral sunscreen is made in Canada and contains both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for complete coverage to form a protective barrier against sun and provide water resistance. 100% of total ingredients are of natural origin, and 57% are sourced from organic farms (Certified by Ecocert Green life according to Ecocert standards). Chemical sunscreen, on the other hand, contains artificial ingredients and does not carry natural or green certifications.

At Green Beaver, we value transparency. Our complete list of ingredients and certifications can be found on our website. Our products are suitable for all skin types and do not carry the health risks associated with chemical sunscreen.

What Are the Cons of Mineral Sunscreen?

Due to the high zinc content, most mineral sunscreen can be hard to apply and feel sticky or thick. It often leaves a white cast after application or appears white when it comes into contact with water.
